Yes, you did read the title of this article correctly. Wrestlers have and still do lose insane amounts of weight. The most insane story I have heard is losing 40 lbs over night. My favorite story, like the title of this article says, is about a wrestler who lost 10 lbs in an hour. Before I get into this article, however, I must tell you that some of this stuff is not the smartest thing to do and is really unhealthy for your body. However, wrestlers (and other sports with weight classes) know more about weight loss than anything, and I can tell you amazing ways to drop around 10 lbs a week (this was actually my dad) . Skip down to below the stories section to read about the actually smart methods and to see some of the highest rating weight loss books on Amazon.
Weight Loss Stories
10 LBS IN AN HOUR
In wrestling (back in the 1980's) there was a chance to lose wight after you weighed in. If you were overweight, you could have an hour to lose weight and get to a lower weight class. Of course, my dad shows up and was 10 pounds overweight (he was regularly 190 and lost weight down to 155). When he finds that out, he decides to put on 3 hoodies, 3 pairs of sweatpants, and started spitting in a bottle while chewing gum (that way he had more saliva generating. He then ran/jogged for the next hour and lost around 10.6 lbs.
The Health Issues
Out of the 10.6 lbs, 9 lbs of it was just water loss. This caused him to be severely dehydrated and made him sluggish. He was able too, however, drink water right after losing the weight that way he could gain it back. There is no long term benefit from doing it.
40 LBS IN ONE NIGHT
This story is not my dads or mine, it is a good friends. What he did was he turned his heater to 100 degrees and slept in a garbage bag. This caused him to lose 38.8 lbs of water weight and 1.2 lbs of fat.
The Health Issues
He was hospitalized right after the tournament and had to have water and electrolytes pumped into him to replace all the water he had lost. He learned his lesson, but not very well because he still sweats weight off at night, but not more than 10 lbs.
NOT EATING FOR DAYS AT A TIME
It's very common place to see someone who weighs around 170 lbs to only eat 500 calories a day for the upcoming days, sometimes even fasting completely. I remember at state I had to help carry 3 people off the mat because they didn't have the strength to get up and move.
The Health Issues
Not eating is incredibly dangerous and deadly. The scenarios listed above are actually incredibly dangerous and was a brush against death.
